If you're a collector, investor or after the guitar snob bagging rights these Artist /Harley Benton guitar's are never going to compete. On the other hand if you're a beginner to intermediate or semi pro player who's not into the BS guitar hype & needs a very reasonably priced guitar that sounds & plays just as good (if not better in some cases) then the Artist & Harley Benton's are the way to go.

Me with my ranting again. These old units are so very awful until you do one thing, *plug an 8-string or larger string scale guitar into them.* With this as the task, they give unmatched note clarity, definition and the distinct note identity. *The signal loss in the conversion also drops heaps of fly away noises and reflections or resonance induced noises.* The Zoom G2 does the same thing, but the Zoom G2nu was where they made a big leap in overall sound quality, but it captures all the unwanted sound debris. *It sounds ridiculous, but I will never be with out a couple of these ancient units with this specific characteristic for as long as I play guitar.* Outside of that, yeah it is the horrid plastic, cartoon and toy-like sound we hated about all the original digital gear back in the day lol. The bottom line is even for 6-string, if it were an off day or I just needed an absolutely picture perfect, commercial grade recording and were desperate due to a lot of flaws getting into the recordings, I would immediately grab one of these specific units and play my live show or make my recordings. *The bottom line is for an audience and for an album, nobody will care the way we personally do.*

Is the Marshall JFX-1 based heavily (or completely) on this unit ?

I had one of these for a few months damn near 30 years ago and really liked it, but I decided not to keep it because for what I spent on the unit and midi controller and as immaculate as the unit sounded, there was no variety in terms of pedal, amp and speaker models. They all had the obvious tube texture and they did a great job at really getting it's traits to carryover and make it all the way to the speaker, but it also had this very perfect and unavoidable color and texture in every single patch no matter what you did. It's one of these strange pieces that still get used just for that reason alone, the recording consistency. *It's similar to my Zoom G2 which I still use almost exclusively for 8-string guitars.* It's weaknesses and obscene natural compression from the semiconductor processing gets rid of absolutely all the fly away noise and "trash" in the signal pouring out of an 8-string when you start alternate pick shredding and hitting super elaborate and massive arpeggios. *It is most definitely and obviously a digital sound with the dreaded "plastic" texture and body to absolutely everything you play that we oh so hated digital for decades ago, but once you use it with an 8-string you don't fucking care! lol* It's a redundant and outdated sound and not the only piece of equipment that can get "perfect" results, but that unit does it for 8-string no matter how you use it and what you plug it into. It's good enough that I'll seek out 2 more for backups within the next few years. It does it so amazingly well I want to make sure I have one available for as long as I play. If just having an off day on 6-string, the way it plastifies the signal is still a cheap trick for a recording that sounds million dollar perfect. *Reminds me of what the Behringer V-Amp dual rackmount unit did and I'm sure it would also provide the same results with 8-string and beyond.*

You’re right, “Edge of Thorns “is a tough one. That feel and that shuffle is really hard to nail down while playing accurately. You did a great job on the solo!

I used to have a Pandora PX2 back in the day but this is way beyond that. The P2 sounds every bit as good as my Fractal FM3 but there is a drum machine and a looper that can sync together. It takes me 5 minutes to rig up my FM3 with my laptop to play drum loops. This is really appealing for somebody like me who just widdles about at home and records the odd thing now again. Tempting to sell the FM3. Excellent demo as always Leon.

The older I get, the more simplicity and subtlety appeals to me, and I don't think that's just because of mental decline. I love grease and crazy effects, but a pedal like this makes you appreciate subtlety. Truly nice.

Leon, stop posting things and making them sound Grammy worthy. :P I don't have the cash to buy all of this at the moment :P I have the Orange Two Stroke (2 of em), this sounds like it would be better for cleans/bluesy tone. I love Fuzz, but taming it for any "clean tones" is tricky. Eq/compression pedals seem to be the way to go for "quack".

Everything you do just sounds better with a carl martin booster ... Its one of those more pedal type of definitions like what satch would say..lol..i still have that first carl martin booster with one tube that runs on 110 volts and the first mxr distortion plus... Carl martins stuff is all especially pleasing to use with your tone .. this one has way more range than the first one he is famous for building.... I wonder if he still puts tubes in them anymore.. cheers and Cheerios mate.. kinda like saying everything goes better with coke cola ... Just dont forget the milk with the Cheerios mate 🌏 😺

Great idea to have the 3 band eq. Especially for Strats when you are changing guitars at a gig ( Strat to humbuckers) you could have this to put on to give you more level and tone on the Strat!

Great stuff as always! While that time period was an uncool era in the west for stereo rack stuff here in Japan it was opposite with Visual Kei boom (think continuation of 80s glam rock evolving without grunge ever being a thing.) So you had bands like LUNA SEA and MALICE MIZER showing off their rack rigs up to the 00s.
